Call me old fashioned but, I love to be around people with good manners. I'm not speaking about knowing all the little details (I really get confused with those kind of things since I live basically an informal life style). I'm speaking about kindness, courtesy, thoughtfulness, not letting doors slam in people's faces, not making rude noises, not interrupting people when they are speaking, being thoughtful and tidy, and all of that good stuff! In other words, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
Of course, good manners start at home so I've decided to make a huge effort to work with Ave, and with anyone else in the house who is interested in improving their manners. I just purchased two books, Manners Made Easy by June Hines Moore, and Everyday Graces by Karen Santorum. I will be including these two books into Ave's home school lesson plan.
Today we worked on proper behavior when meeting someone for the first time. We practiced. He thought it was kind of funny. Hopefully, this will help him. Typically, he looks away when meeting people for the first time and mumbles a "Hi" or something like that. So today he practiced what June Hines Moore calls the 6 Six's 1. Stand (stand up when meeting someone for the first time) 2. Smile 3. See (Look directly at them) 4. Shake (shake hands) 5. Speak (Introduce yourself) 6. Say (Repeat their name). So far so good. I was the new person he was meeting, so for fun I made sure to tell him in a high pitched old lady voice, "My what a well mannered young boy you are. It was so nice meeting you."
Anyway, I will let you know if the books help or not. Also, if you see Ave using good manners, please give him some positive reinforcement.

Francine Rivers
Francine Rivers just published a new book. The title is "Her Mother's Hope." I haven't read it yet but hopefully I will be able to read it real soon. It's about a mother and her daughter. It should be good and inspiring since all of her books are.

Books...Books....Books....
I positively love to read! I am from a family of readers. I remember my grandma and grandpa lying in bed together, propped up with pillows, with their lamps on, both reading books, and chewing on a stick of gum (they kept their chewing gum stash in their nightstand-which I regularly raided.) This is such a fond memory for me.
This love of reading was passed down to me, and I can still vividly remember hiding to read a good book when I was suppose to be doing my chores or homework--books like, Trixie Beldon, Misty of Chincoteague, The Black Stallion, and the Little House on the Pairie series. While growing up, books were everywhere in our home. On the coffee table, by the bed, in the bathroom, and of course, on the bookshelves.
Today, I still enjoy reading. I really enjoy reading books that inspire me to become a better person. Three of my favorite books are, A Voice in the Wind, Echo in the Darkness,and Sure as the Dawn by Francine Rivers. These books are so inspiring and completely captivating. Once I started reading them, I could hardly put them down. It has been several years since I have read them, but I plan on reading them again during my winter break from school. Francine Rivers is also the author of Redeeming Love, another really great book! These books will make you cry, but in a good sort of way.
Other books that I have enjoyed reading in the past that stick out in my mind are the Abrams Daughter Series by Beverly Lewis, Hidden Places, A Proper Pursuit, and a Candle in the Darkness by Lynn Austin, and I have always enjoyed reading Grace Livingston Hill books (although these books were written many years ago, they still inspire me.)
In addition, I like to read books about real life heroes such as Corrie Ten Boom, and some of my favorite classics are Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte (my big sister introduced me to this book when we were quite young), and The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas (a friend convinced me to read this book, and although I didn't think I would like it, I did.)
And lastly, of course, my most favorite book of all is the Bible-The Word of God. This book directs my path, inspires me, stablizes me, gives me direction, gives me hope, teaches me how I should live my life, what kind of parent, wife, friend and employee I should be, and so on. There is no book that compares to the Bible!
